‘Excrement School’ changes name to protect students from ridicule
An elementary school named “Daebyun,” whose sound in Korean can make one think about “feces,” is changing its name to “Yongam,” the school said Thursday. The school had been named after the area of Gijang County in Busan where it is located. Most of the residents in this area are alumni of this elementary school. 대변초, 54년만에 바꾼 이름 ‘용암초’
부산 기장군 대변리에 위치한 대변초등학교가 용암초등학교로 개명한다. 31일 학교 측은 총동창회에서 공모한 이름 중 용암초가 만장일치로 단독 추천됐다고 발표했다. 용암은 대변마을의 옛 지명으로, 일제강점기 행정구역 개편으로 대변으로 불리기 직전까지 사용된 마을명이라고 전해졌다. 이 학교는 “감수성이 예민한 어린 나이의 학생들이 교명 때문에 놀림과 상처를 받았다”는 이유를 들었다. 지난 1963년 개교한 이후 반 세기만에 교명을 바꾸기로 한 것이다. 교명을 둘러싼 ‘웃픈(웃기고 슬픈)’ 사연은 수도 없이 많다. 지역에서 해마다 열리는 축구대회 때 학교 이름으로 “냄새난다. 저리가라” 놀림 받자 아이들이 평정심을 잃어 박빙이던 승부를 진 적이 있다. 부산시 전체 학교발표회에서 지역대표로 참가한 대변초 영어 뮤지컬팀 학생들이 학교명에 관중이 폭소하자 제 기량을 발휘하지 못한 일도 있었다. “어느 학교를 다니냐”는 질문에는 위축되어 답을 피하거나 입을 꾹 다물어 버리는 학생들을 보
