이달 12일 구글은 故 타키조 이와사키의 121년 탄생기념일을 기리는 이미지를 사이트 전면에 게시했다. 일식 요리집 진열장에 놓여있을 법한 음식 모형의 이미지이다. (구글)일본에선 장인 정신을 가지고 이러한 모형을 수작업 생산하고 있는데. 바로 이 시초가 1930년대 타키조 이와시키의 ‘오믈렛’ 작품이다. 당시 이와사키가 최초 만들어 낸 밀랍 오믈렛은 그의 아내조차 진짠지 가짠지 판별하지 못했다고 전해진다. 이 오믈렛은 아직도 기후에 있는 이와사키 생가에 보존되어 있다. 기후는 음식 모형을 만드는 생산지로 이름을 떨치고 있다. 근래에 접어들어선 밀랍 대신 플라스틱을 사용해 만든 모형들이 많지만 이 또한 대량생산 하기 보단 손으로 제작하는 경우가 다반사다. 각 음식점에서 ‘간판’으로 내거는 대표 음식이 제각각 다르게 생겼을 뿐만 아니라 손으로 작업해야만 질적으로 우수한 작품을 완성할 수 있기 때문이다.
