지난 달 영국 더럼 카운티의 비숍 오클랜드에서 성화 봉송을 하던 소년이 넘어졌다. 그러나 소년은 혼자서 일어서지 못했다. 13세 소년 키어른 막스웰은 희귀 암으로 왼쪽 다리를 절단했고, 부착한 의족이 너무 무거워 주변의 도움을 받아야만 했다.

그러나 키어른에게 ’기쁨에 찬 비명’을 지르게 할 만한 사건이 일어났다.

유럽에서 최고 액수의 복권 당첨금을 자랑하는 유로밀리언의 당첨자 부부가 키어른에게 새로운 의족을 선물하겠다고 나선 것이다. 콜린과 크리스 웨어 부부는 지난해 유로밀리언 당첨금 1억 6천 백만 파운드(약 2800억 원)을 얻는 행운의 주인공들이다. 

당시 유로밀리언은 계속해 이월되어 많은 사람들을 흥분시켰다. 보통 사람들은 물론 국제마피아, 중국의 부호들까지 유로밀리언 구입에 열을 올렸으나, 사상 최대의 당첨금은 이들 평범한 부부에게로 돌아와 화제가 됐다.

이들 부부는 키어른이 새 의족을 달 수 있도록 수천 만원을 기부한 것으로 알려졌다.

키어른은 지난 2010년 10월 유잉 육종이라는 희귀 암 판정을 받았다. 유잉 육종은 1년에 30명도 걸리지 않는 희귀 암으로, 주로 20세 미만의 환자들의 뼈에 악성 종양이 생긴다. 키어른은 결국 지난 해 3월 왼쪽 다리를 절단해야 했다. 

키어른은 투병 생활에도 불구하고 밝고 활발한 성격으로 움직이기를 좋아했다. 그러나 그러기에는 소년의 의족은 너무 무거웠고, 부모는 키어른에게 미국에서 수입되는 가벼운 달아주고 싶어했다.

이 훈훈한 소식은 여러 누리꾼들을 감동시켰다. 누리꾼들은 “신이여, 저들을 축복하소서. 키에른에게 행운이 있기를!” “이런 훈훈함을 보게 되어 기쁘다. 웨어 부부가 얼마를 기부했든, 액수는 중요하지 않다. 키에른 가족들에게는 가격을 매길 수 없는 기쁨일 것이다,” “이런 사람들이야말로 복권에 당첨되어야 한다” 등의 반응을 보였다.


A 13-year-old who lost a leg to cancer will get a new prosthetic limb, donated by Britain‘s biggest-ever lottery winners.

Kieran Maxwell cannot stand up by himself after he fell while carrying the Olympic torch. He needs help from others because of his heavy prosthetics.

Maxwell’s problem will soon be over, as he is set to receive a life-changing new leg thanks to the donation from Euromillion winners Colin and Chris Weir.

After hearing about Kieran’s battle they decided to donate a five-figure sum to buy the new leg for him. They won 161 million pounds ($252.3 million) from Euromillions a year ago.

Kieran’s left leg was amputated in March 2011 after years of painful chemotherapy. In October 2010, he was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive cancer called “Ewings Sarcoma,” which affects fewer than 30 children a year.

He “screamed with delight” at the life-changing news and is set to have his leg within six weeks.

Many online users were moved by the news. Some posted encouraging comments, including: “Bless them....good luck Kieran,” “Nice to see such kindness being displayed. How much they won and how much they donate is irrelevant. To Kieran‘s family it is priceless” and “This is exactly the sort persons we need to win the lottery.”
