The average age of retirement for salaried workers in Korea now exceeds the age of 61, with a law raising the retirement age to 60 coming into full effect last year, according to the Labor Ministry. A survey by the ministry found that workers were retiring at an average age of 61.1 in 2017, the first year the new law was expanded to affect all companies with more than one employee. The ministry had surveyed 20,000 randomly selected firms with more than one worker from June to November 2017.

South Korea’s washing machine exports have nearly halved over the past five years due to US safeguard measures. According to the Korea Customs Service, exports of washers last year amounted to $118.6 million, down $4.56 million from the previous year. Last year’s exports were about half of the $209.59 million in 2012, data showed. Exports of washers to the US fell to as low as $6.16 million in 2015 but bounced back to $23.4 million in 2016 and to $43.02 million last year.

The number of Korean restaurants worldwide, serving bibimbap, bulgogi and other Korean dishes, rose to 33,499 across 90 countries last year, according to a report published by the Korean Food Promotion Institute. The number increased 262 percent from 9,253 in 2009. There were 15,985 restaurants in China, 9,238 in Japan and 3,293 in the US. Sales of Lotto tickets hit the second-highest annual number ever last year, the Korea Lottery Commission said. Total sales marked 3.79 trillion won ($3.4 billion) for 2017. The figure comes close to the largest tallied since the country started selling Lotto tickets in 2002. Sales peaked in 2003 at 3.82 trillion won. That number slipped to 3.29 trillion won in 2004, as total sales continued to drop to 2.26 trillion won in 2007 before rebounding to 3.04 trillion won in 2014.
