South Korean police on Thursday said a man had been arrested without warrant on suspicion of hitting a bus driver with a small hammer following an argument. The man is reportedly a Chinese national.

According to Anseong Police Station in Anseong, Gyeonggi Province, the suspect in his 20s got on a bus at a stop in Miyang-myeon at around 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The man reportedly placed his leg on top of his luggage while sitting at the back of the bus, which prompted the driver to ask the man to put his leg down.

An argument then ensued, after which the suspect allegedly used one of the bus's emergency hammers to strike the driver on the head.

The driver sustained a minor injury and managed to overpower the suspect, handing him over to police who arrived at the scene. The Criminal Act stipulates that those caught in the act of committing a crime can be arrested without a warrant.

Officials are further investigating the case.

South Korean law states that assaulting another person can be punished by up to two years in prison or a fine of up to 5 million won ($3,700).
