이번 회에는 저희 책 Advanced Vocab에서 소개한 중상급 영단어들을 알려드립니다. 단어의 우리말 뜻을 기억하는 데에서 그치지 않고, 난이도 있는 단어를 실제로 활용하는 단계까지 나아가 보기 바랍니다.

〈판단력, 바른성품, 신중함〉

1. integrity [intéɡrəti] 성실, 청렴

통합한다는 뜻인 integrate, 어떤 것을 완전하게 만들기 위해 꼭 필요하고 중요하다는 뜻인 integral, 수학에서 정수를 뜻하는 integer에서 볼 수 있듯이 integ-는 wholeness(완전함)를 의미한다. integrity는 도적적 완전함을 일컬으며, 위인들의 성품을 설명할 때 많이 등장하는 ‘성실’, ‘청렴’, ‘정직’ 등을 영어로 표현할 때 쓸 수 있는 단어다.

Ideally, we would like our politicians to be trustworthy and have courage and integrity.

이상적인 생각이지만, 우리는 정치인들이 신뢰할 수 있고 용기 있으며 청렴하기를 바란다.

● 이순신은 정적들로부터 모함을 당해 억울하게 파직당하고 백의종군해야 했지만 청렴결백함을 잃지 않았다.

Despite being framed by his rivals, wrongfully stripped of his military rank and forced to fight as a common soldier, the Admiral Yi Sun Sin still maintained strong integrity.

2. law-abiding [lɔ́ːəbàidiŋ] 법을 지키는

‘준수하다’라는 뜻인 abide by의 abide를 활용한 표현이다. ‘법을 잘 지키는’이라는 의미를 지닌다.

The mayor credited the law-abiding citizens of his town for the continuously improving crime record.

시장은 범죄율이 지속적으로 낮아진 것은 주민들의 준법 정신 덕이라고 했다.

● 영국인 친구는 밤에 서울이 런던보다 안전하다며 한국인들이 법을 잘 지키냐고 물어본 적이 있다.

My friend from Britain once asked me if Koreans were very law-abiding, because he thought it was safer at night in Seoul than in London.

3. lenient [líːniənt] 관대한

잘못에 대한 사람의 태도나 권력 기관의 처벌이 관대함을 표현한다.

Through this high-profile pedophile case, a public consensus emerged that the short jail sentence imposed in a child rape case was too lenient.

세간의 관심을 끈 이번 아동 성범죄 사건을 계기로 아동 성추행에 대해 형량이 짧은 것은 너무 관대하다는 대중의 인식이 생겨났다.

● 국세청이 탈세에 대해 관대해서는 안 된다.

The National Tax Service should never be lenient about tax evasions.

4. levelheaded [lévəlhédid] 분별 있는, 냉정한

말 그대로 ‘굴곡 없이 평평한(level) 두뇌’라는 의미다. 분별력 있고 냉정한 태도를 표현한다.

During the earthquake, we relied on our levelheaded parents to keep everyone calm and safe.

지진이 났을 때 우리는 안전을 위해 차분하게 냉정을 지키시는 부모님께 의지했다.

● 양측이 분쟁 해결에 냉정하게 접근하니 평화 협정이 잘 맺어질 것 같다.

Both parties’ levelheaded approach to conflict resolution bodes well for the peace treaty.

5. magnanimous [mæɡnǽnəməs] 아량이 넓은, 관대한

magna(big)+animous(animal과 같은 어원으로 spirit의 뜻)로 이뤄진 단어다. ‘정신이 넓다’라는 어원에서 유래하여, 아량이 넓다는 뜻으로 쓰인다.

We were amazed at the magnanimous spirit demonstrated by the hard-working volunteers.

우리는 열심히 일하는 자원봉사자들이 보여준 넉넉한 마음에 놀랐다.

● 계속 놀림을 받았지만 그녀는 다른 학생들에게 관대했다.

Although she was constantly teased, she remained magnanimous towards the other students.

6. meticulous [mətíkjuləs] 꼼꼼한

detail-oriented(디테일 지향적인)라는 뜻을 지닌다. 세심하고 꼼꼼한 사람을 가리키는 단어다.

Maria's meticulous preparations for the interview included hours and hours of research, a thorough review of the company's official literature, a haircut and the purchase of a new pair of black shoes.

마리아는 몇 시간 동안 리서치를 하고, 회사의 공식 문서를 철저히 검토하며, 머리를 다듬고 새 검은 구두를 사는 등 인터뷰를 위해 꼼꼼히 준비했다.

● 수년간 꼼꼼히 연구한 끝에 존은 자기만의 IT 사업을 시작해서 큰 성공을 거두었다.

After years of meticulous research, John launched his own IT business, which achieved high levels of success.

7. no-nonsense [nòu nɑ́nsens] 현실적인, 실제적인

말 그대로 ‘nonsense를 용납하지 않는다’는 뜻이다. 현실적이면서도 철저하고 허튼 구석이 없는 모양을 일컫는다.

The no-nonsense highway patrolman followed procedure to the letter and was unmoved by tears or pleas for leniency.

빈틈이 없는 고속도로 교통경찰은 철저하게 절차대로 처리했고 봐달라는 읍소에도 전혀 흔들리지 않았다.

● 〈데이트 무작정 따라하기〉라는 책은 데이트 상대 여성에게 좋은 인상을 주는 방법을 모르는 남자들을 위한 매우 현실적인 조언들을 많이 포함하고 있다.

The book, Dating for Dummies, contains a lot of no-nonsense advice for guys who don't know how to impress their date.
