이번 회에는 저희 책 Advanced Vocab에서 소개한 중상급 영단어들을 알려드립니다. 단어의 우리말 뜻을 기억하는 데에서 그치지 않고, 난이도 있는 단어를 실제로 활용하는 단계까지 나아가 보기 바랍니다.

〈정도가 높음을 표현하는 단어들〉

1. dog-eat-dog [dɔ́ːɡ íːt dɔ́ːɡ] 무자비하고 인정사정없는

말 그대로 잡아먹고 잡아먹히는 치열한 경쟁을 일컫는 단어다.

When I complained to my supervisor about my co-worker's lack of ethics, he simply replied, "It's a dog-eat-dog world out there."

직장 상사에게 동료의 윤리의식 부재에 대해 불평하자 그는“잡아먹지 않으면 잡아 먹히는 게 세상이야”라고 간단히 말했다.

● 무자비한 자본주의는 부작용도 많지만 경쟁이 있어야 발전이 있는 것도 사실이다.

Dog-eat-dog capitalism has many side effects, but it is true that there is no advancement without competition.

2. epochal [épəkəl] 획기적인, 신기원의

‘새 시대’라는 뜻인 epoch의 형용사형이다. ‘새 시대를 정의할 정도로 중요한’이라는 의미에서 유래하여, 획기적인 것을 강조할 때 쓴다.

The shattering of the Iron Curtain and the tearing down of the Berlin Wall was an epochal event which not only ended nuclear confrontation but also liberated millions of people.

철의 장막이 걷히고 베를린 장벽이 붕괴된 것은 단지 핵 대결을 종식시켰을 뿐 아니라 수백만 명을 해방시킨 획기적인 사건이었다.

● 인터넷은 사람간의 소통방식에 획기적인 변화를 가져왔다.

The advent of the Internet brought an epochal change to the way people communicate with each other.

3. excruciating [ikskrúːʃièitiŋ] 매우 고통스러운, 심한

ex(thoroughly, 강조의 접두사)+cruciating(십자가에 매단다는 뜻인 crucify와 같은 어원)으로 구성된 단어다. 고통이 매우 심함을 강조한다.

Unaware of the foul ball heading towards him, my friend Jim got hit in the head, causing excruciating pain.

내 친구 짐은 파울 볼이 자기에게 날아오는지도 모르다가 공에 머리를 맞는 바람에 참기 힘들 정도의 고통을 느꼈다.

● 하루종일 머리가 참을 수 없이 아파서 결국 조퇴해야 했다.

I had an excruciating headache all day and had to take the afternoon off.

4. explicit [iksplísit] 분명한, 노골적인

ex(out)+plicit(‘합판’이라는 뜻인 plywood의 ply와 같은 어원으로 fold의 뜻)로 이뤄진 단어다. unfold(펴다)라는 어원에서 유래하여 ‘분명히 표현하다’, ‘분명하고 명백한’이라는 의미를 지니지만, 성적으로 노골적인 내용을 담고 있다는 뜻으로도 쓴다.

A well-known college professor was forced to resign because he sent sexually explicit images of children to his students.

유명 대학 교수가 성적으로 노골적인 아동 사진을 학생들에게 보내는 바람에 사임해야만 했다.

● 그는 대통령 출마에 관심이 없다고 분명히 말했다.

He explicitly said that he is not interested in running for president.

5. exponentially [èkspounénʃəli] 기하급수적으로

a의 n제곱(an)에서 n을 우리말로는 ‘지수’라고 하는데 영어로는 exponent라고 한다. exponentially는 n제곱으로 증가하듯 기하급수적으로 급속하게 증가한다는 뜻으로 쓰는 단어다. 참고로 ‘~제곱’은 to the ~th power라고 표현하므로, a의 n 제곱은 a to the nth power라고 하면 된다. 예컨대 2의 4제곱은 two to the fourth power라고 한다.

Cases of individual debt adjustment are growing exponentially as layoffs are showing no signs of slowing down.

정리해고가 잦아들 기미를 보이지 않으면서 개인 채무 조정이 기하급수적으로 늘고 있다.

● 국가 채무가 급속히 증가하고 있어 우려의 목소리가 높다.

Worries run deep over exponentially increasing sovereign debt.

6. full-fledged [fúl flédʒd] 완전한

원래 뜻은 ‘깃털(fledge)이 완전히 자랐다’이다. ‘완전한’, ‘진정한’, ‘충분히 자격을 갖춘’이라는 의미로 쓴다.

Michael is a full-fledged member at Asiana Country Club, so he can book tee times for any day.

마이클은 아시아나 컨트리 클럽의 정회원이라서 언제든 티타임을 예약할 수 있다.

● 요즘 나오는 TV들은 대개 해상도가 1080p인 풀HD이다.

Most of the new TVs available these days are in 1080p full-fledged HD.
