지난 회에 이어, 특히 프레젠테이션 자료를 만들 때 도움이 될 비즈니스 표현들을 소개합니다. ‘비즈니스 영어’라는 게 따로 떨어져 존재하는 것은 아닙니다만, 일상 회화에서 흔히 볼 수 없는 표현들을 활용하는 것도 사실입니다. 저희 책 『나는 더 영어답게 말하고 싶다 비즈니스 편』에서 뽑은 표현들입니다.  

<주력사업>

A: As one of the fastest growing Internet companies, we should start making cellphones.

B: We shouldn’t overextend ourselves. We need to concentrate on our core business and expand accordingly.

A: 가장 빠르게 성장하고 있는 인터넷 기업으로서 우리는 휴대전화 생산을 시작해야 합니다.

B: 사업을 너무 확장해서는 안 돼. 핵심 사업에 집중하고 그에 따라 확장해 나가야지.

SITUATION 핵심 분야에 집중하는 경우

평범하게 We need to concentrate on our key areas and expand accordingly.

영어답게 We need to concentrate on our core businesses and expand accordingly.

핵심 분야에 집중하는 것을 표현할 때 유용한 단어가 core입니다. core가 핵심이라는 뜻이므로 concentrate on one’s core라고 하면 핵심에 집중한다는 표현이 되죠. extend는 앞서 설명한 branch out과 같은 의미인데, 위 예문처럼 overextend라고 하면, 무리하게 새로운 사업 영역으로 진출한다는 뜻을 나타낼 수 있습니다.

One of this year’s major initiatives is to streamline production by combining our offshore factories into one location. This will dramatically decrease production cycles and shipping costs as well as give us the benefit of getting our products to store shelves much faster.

올해 주요 추진 과제 중 하나는 해외 생산 시설을 하나로 합쳐 생산 설비를 간소화하는 것입니다. 이렇게 함으로써 생산 사이클을 대폭 단축하고 물류비를 줄일 수 있을 뿐 아니라, 상품도 훨씬 빨리 출시하는 이득을 얻게 될 것입니다.

SITUATION 사업의 군살을 빼는 경우

평범하게 I’m thinking of making our business simpler by focusing on office supplies.

영어답게 I’m thinking of streamlining our business by focusing on office supplies.

‘사업의 군살을 뺀다’, ‘일부 사업을 정리하고 규모를 줄인다’라고 할 때 쓸 수 있는 표현이 streamline입니다. streamline은 원래 유선형으로 만든다는 의미인데, 조직을 간소화해 능률을 기한다고 할 때도 유용하죠.

<전략, 계획>

A: Our supervisors always tell us to “think outside the box,” but that’s difficult to do when you’re working in a tiny cubicle 12 hours a day.

B: They should rearrange the office and our work schedules in order to foster a more creative atmosphere.

A: 윗분들은 항상 발상의 전환을 하라고 하는데 하루 12시간을 사무실에 틀어박혀 일하면서는 힘들어.

B: 좀 더 생산적인 분위기를 조성하려면 사무실 구성도 바꾸고 업무 진행계획도 바꿔야 해.

SITUATION ‘발상의 전환’을 표현할 때

평범하게 I want our team to think innovatively for our next project.

영어답게 I want our team to think outside the box for our next project.

‘발상의 전환’을 영어로 표현할 때 적합한 말은 think outside the box입니다. 정해진 틀(box) 안에서 생각하지 않고 그 밖으로 나와서 생각한다는 의미로, 원어민에게는 상투적으로 느껴질 정도로 익숙한 표현이죠.

A: Our execution will need to improve, next time we launch a product.

B: I agree. Everything looked great on paper, but we just couldn’t pull it off.

A: 다음 신상품을 출시할 때는 계획을 좀 더 제대로 실행에 옮길 필요가 있어.

B: 맞아. 계획상으로는 근사해 보였는데 성공시키지를 못했어.

SITUATION 계획을 실행에 옮길 때

평범하게 Our strategy was sound, but putting it into action didn’t go as planned.

영어답게 Our strategy was sound, but our execution didn’t go as planned.

계획을 실행에 옮긴다고 할 때 쓰는 가장 일반적인 표현은 put a plan into action인데, execute라고 해도 의미가 같습니다. execute는 ‘처형하다’라는 뜻도 지니지만, 기업에서 계획을 실행한다는 표현으로 잘 등장하죠.

A: What’s our game plan with regard to launching our business into East Asia?

B: We’re sending a fact-finding team to China, South Korea and Japan. If all goes well, we will adapt our products and services to those local markets.

A: 동아시아에서 사업을 시작하는 계획은 어떤 것입니까?

B: 중국, 한국, 일본에 실사팀을 보낼 것입니다. 예상대로 잘 진행되면 상품과 서비스를 시장 상황에 맞게 바꿀 예정입니다.

SITUATION 일을 처리해 나가는 ‘계획’이나 ‘전략’을 표현할 때

평범하게 We need to change our strategy in order to beat competitors.

영어답게 We need to change our game plan in order to beat competitors.

game plan은 비즈니스맨들이 아주 많이 사용하는 말입니다. 경기(game)를 진행하는 작전(plan)에서 유래한 말로, 프로젝트나 사업의 진행에 관한 구체적인 일정이나 계획을 뜻하죠. 일을 어떻게 진행할 예정인지 설명할 때, The game plan is ~처럼 문장을 시작할 수 있습니다.
