지난번에 이어 시사적인 내용을 말할 때 도움이 될, 좀 더 영어다운 표현들을 보겠습니다. 저희 책 『나는 더 영어답게 말하고 싶다 시사이슈 편』에서 뽑은 표현들입니다.  

<경제>

A: Now that the shipbuilding industry is stagnating, our economy hasn’t been doing so well.
B: We need to find a new growth engine to get it up and running again.

A: 조선 산업이 정체를 보이고 있어서 우리 경제 상황이 안 좋은 것 같아.
B: 경제가 다시 살아나서 잘 돌아갈 수 있게 새로운 성장엔진을 찾아야 해.

SITUATION 성장 동력을 말할 때
평범하게 We need to find a new opportunity for the economy.
영어답게 We need to find a new growth engine for the economy.

경제를 견인할 성장동력을 영어로는 growth engine이라고 말합니다. 달리 driver를 활용하여 Shipbuilding industry was the main driver of Korea’s economic growth.처럼 말할 수도 있습니다. 뭔가를 구동하거나 추진하는 것은 모두 driver라고 할 수 있는데, 경제 성장을 주도하는 요인을 말할 때 활용해도 되죠.

A: The disparity between the rich and the poor has been increasing over the past decade.
B: I know. The real problem is we don’t have any powerful countermeasures in our hands.

A: 빈부격차가 지난 10년간 더 벌어졌어.
B: 맞아. 진짜 문제는 갖고 있는 효과적인 대책이 없다는 점이지.

SITUATION 빈부격차를 말할 때
평범하게 Rich people have become richer while poor people have become poorer.
영어답게 The disparity between the rich and poor has been increasing.

‘빈부격차’는 차이를 말하는 disparity/gap 등을 쓰고 뒤이어 between (the) rich and (the) poor를 붙여 표현할 수 있습니다. 거의 정해진 표현처럼 쓰이죠. disparity는 격차나 차이를 말하는 조금 어려운 단어입니다. The gap between the rich and poor widens.처럼 ‘빈부격차라는 틈이 벌어진다’라고 말할 수도 있습니다.

<정치>

A: His comment was politically motivated, even though he tried to hide his intention behind a veil of neutrality.
B: Yeah, I was able to see he was trying to shield the president.

A: 중립성이라는 장막 뒤에 자신의 의도를 숨기려 했지만 그의 발언은 정치적인 의도를 지니고 있었어.
B: 맞아. 나도 그가 대통령을 보호하려 하는 것을 알겠더라고.

SITUATION 정치적인 의도를 지니고 있다고 할 때
평범하게 His comment had political intentions.
영어답게 His comment was politically motivated.

motivate는 보통 동기부여를 한다는 의미로 쓰이지만, 어떤 의도를 지니고 있다고 할 때도 활용됩니다. politically motivated라고 하면 정치적인 의도를 지니고 있다는 말이 되죠.

<사회 >

A: An analogy by spoon type is currently popular in Korea. Which category do you think you fall into?
B: I definitely wasn’t born with a gold spoon, but I didn’t get a clay spoon, either.

A: 경제적 지위를 수저 색깔에 비유하는 게 유행이던데. 너는 어느 수저에 해당하는 것 같니?
B: 난 금수저가 아닌 게 확실하지만, 흙수저도 아니야.

SITUATION 금수저 흙수저에 대해 말할 때
평범하게 Linking economic status with a spoon type is currently popular in Korea.
영어답게 An analogy by spoon type is currently popular in Korea.

수저 색깔과 가정환경을 연결시키는 표현방식은 원래 born with a silver spoon in one’s mouth라는 영어 표현에서 유래했죠. ‘입에 은수저를 물고 나오다’가 부잣집에서 태어났다는 의미로 쓰입니다. 수저 색깔을 경제적 환경과 연결하는 것은 하나의 비유법이므로 analogy by spoon type처럼 ‘비유’를 뜻하는 analogy를 활용하여 말할 수 있습니다.

A: Why is there such a strong craze over private education in Korea?
B: Competition for better schools and jobs is so fierce that parents have to resort to private education.


A: 한국은 사교육 열풍이 왜 그렇게 거세?
B: 좋은 학교와 직업을 향한 경쟁이 너무 치열해서 학부모들이 사교육에 의존해야 해.

SITUATION 사교육 열풍을 말할 때
평범하게 Why do parents depend too much on private education?
영어답게 Why is there such a strong craze over private education?

우리에게 익숙한 단어 crazy는 craze의 형용사형입니다. ‘열풍’이나 ‘열광’처럼 어떤 것에 많은 사람이 강한 관심을 보이는 상황을 craze라고 말할 수 있죠. ‘사교육 열풍’을 표현하기에도 적당한 단어입니다.

<문화>

A: YouTube has contributed greatly to the success of the Korean Wave.
B: That's right. Many Korean artists’ videos became viral there, and that’s how people became interested in K-pop.

A: 유튜브가 한류의 성공에 큰 기여를 했어.
B: 맞아. 많은 한국 가수들의 비디오가 유튜브에서 퍼지면서 사람들이 케이팝에 관심을 갖게 되었어.

SITUATION 널리 퍼진다고 할 때
평범하게 Their videos spread out very quickly on YouTube.
영어답게 Their videos became viral on YouTube.

viral은 virus의 형용사형입니다. 바이러스가 퍼지듯 인터넷을 통해 빠르게 확산되는 모습을 viral 이라고 표현할 수 있습니다. 특히 유튜브에서 동영상이 알려지는 것을 말할 때 유용합니다.
