North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has sent a letter to Chinese President Xi Jinping congratulating him on his birthday, the North's state media reported Friday, in a friendly diplomatic gesture reflecting their restored relations.
Korean Central Television reported that Kim sent a letter and a basket of flowers to Xi to celebrate the leader of the North's major ally.
It is the first time Kim sent a congratulatory message to Xi for his birthday since 2013.
Their relations soured after Kim executed his once-powerful uncle Jang Song-thaek, who had close ties with the Chinese government, in late 2013 and pushed ahead with its third nuclear test earlier that year against Beijing's opposition.
China then joined the international community's move, led by the United States, to impose sanctions on North Korea, further straining bilateral ties.
But the mood began to change this year following the two summits between Kim and Xi that quickly thawed the chill in the relations. (Yonhap)
