Lotte Hi-Mart, the electronics chain run by retail giant Lotte Group, said Thursday that it has launched the first so-called “Hand Pay” service in the industry.
Customers can make payment by scanning the palm of their hands, starting with Lotte Hi-Mart’s Daechi outlet in Gangnam, the company said. The pattern of veins in the palm is scanned with infrared light.
All Lotte Card customers can register for the biometric payment system to pay for goods at the some 55 Lotte Hi-Mart stores across the country.
Lotte Hi-Mart said the payment method would help reduce the time spent handing over credit cards and signing off on purchases.
