여야 원내지도부 및 더불어 민주당 한국 GM 대책 TF과의 간담회를 위해 20일 국회를 방문한 배리 엥글 GM 총괄 부사장 겸 해외사업부분 사장은 간담회 직후 기자들과 만나 ”한국에서 사업을 지속하고자“ 노력하고 있다고 답했지만 한국정부와 어떤 논의를 거치고 있는지에 대해서는 함구했다.

다음은 엥글사장과의 문답 전문:

Q. 한국 정부는 지원에 앞서 GM이 먼저 자구안을 마련해오라고 했는데, 본사 쪽에서 마련해온 자구안 내용이 있다면 설명해주시기 바란다. (The Korean government has asked GM to bring self-rescue plan before discussing (any type of) support, tell us if you brought such plans from the head office?)

A. 우리는 한국에서 사업을 지속하고자 하며, 경영상황을 개선해 건전하게 만들어 나가기를 바랍니다. 이러한 방안을 위해 회생(자구)계획안을 준비했으며, 이러한 계획은 상당한 투자계획은 물론, 지난주에 있었던 구조조정 발표를 포함합니다. 우리의 희망은 이해관계자 모두와 함께 협업하여 경영을 개선 하는 방법을 모색하는 것입니다.
(원문) “It is our preference to stay here in Korea and to fix the business and make it healthy environment. In order to do that, there is a turnaround plan that we have developed. And that plan includes significant investments, the new products. It also includes restructuring activities. Our desire is to work together with all the stakeholders to find a way to be able to fix the business.”

Q. 정부나 산은 등 금융 당국에 기대하는 구체적인 지원안은? (What specific support plan do you expect from the government or from the KDB?)

A. 이 계획이 성공하기 위해서는 우리는 모든 이해관계자로부터의 협조와 지원이 필요합니다. GM은 필요한 역할을 할 준비가 되어 있습니다. 우리는 노조에게도 도와주고 기여를 해 달라고 요청하고 있는 것이며 정부에게도 (요청하고 있는 것입니다). 현재 시점에서는 정부와의 논의사항에 대해서 구체적인 사항들을 말씀하기는 적절치 않습니다만 향후 그런 기회가 있을 것입니다.
(원문) “In order for this plan to work, we do require cooperation and helpful support from all the stakeholders. General Motors is prepared to do its part. We are asking our union to also help and to contribute and the government as well. At this stage, our discussions with the government, I think there will be more appropriate time when we talk about, while the details are private.”

Q. 한국 정부로부터 만족할만한 지원을 얻지 못한다면 완전 철수도 여전히 옵션에 있는 것인지? (Is GM‘s complete withdrawal part of your option, if you don’t get enough support from the Korean government?)

A. 말씀드린바와 같이, 한국에서의 사업을 개선해 지속하고 이를 통해 한국 경제에 중요한 역할을 하기를 바란다 사실은 분명합니다. 이러한 일을 이뤄내기위해 앞으로 많은 일이 남아있지만, 논의를 통해 고무되었고 모두 함께 이뤄 낼 성과에 대해 긍정적인 확신을 갖습니다.
(원문)”As I said already, it is certainly our preference to stay to fix the business and do the important part of Korean economy. There is a lot of work to do to make that happen, but very encouraged by the discussions and optimistic, that is the outcome together we can achieve.”
