The number of South Koreans traveling abroad hit a record high this year amid a growing surge in the number of outbound tourists, industry data showed Tuesday.

The figure was 19.6 million for the first nine months this year, according to the statistics provided by the Korea National Tourism Organization.

The number compares with 18.5 million for the January-October period last year, when the annual figure was the largest ever at 22.3 million.

The figure for the whole of this year will likely hit a new record, taking into account the unusually long 10-day Chuseok holiday in early October, when more than 1.02 million people took overseas trips.

The number of outbound travelers broke the 10 million mark for the first in 2005 and fell to 9.49 million in 2009 during the global financial crisis.

The figure surged 31.5 percent to 12.4 million in 2010 before reaching the 20 million mark last year for the first time. (Yonhap)
