President Moon Jae-in is moving to hold a meeting with the floor leaders of four major political parties here, informed sources said Tuesday.

The meeting, however, has not yet been set as most of the parties, including the ruling Democratic Party, were in the process of electing new floor leaders in a post-election shake-up.

"Nothing has been decided," Kwun Hyuk-ki, a spokesman for the presidential office, told reporters.

The meeting, if held, will be the first of its kind since the president came into office last week, following his victory in an early presidential election caused by the March 10 ouster of his conservative predecessor Park Geun-hye.

Moon has often vowed to work closely with the National Assembly and political parties, possibly out of a necessity to have his government's new policies approved.

The ruling party currently controls 120 seats in the 299-seat National Assembly, far less than a majority required to legislate bills.

The main opposition Liberty Korea Party has 107 Assembly seats while the splinter conservative Bareun Party controls 20 seats.

The center-left People's Party controls 40 seats, but is considered rather critical of the ruling party and its liberal government. (Yonhap)
