폭스바겐 950대 압수차량, 독일로 회수조치

[더인베스터(코리아헤럴드)=안성미기자] 최근 폭스바겐 연비조작 수사를 종결한 검찰이 압수한 950여대의 아우디 및 폭스바겐 차량을 독일 본사로 회수조치할 예정이다.

한 업계 관계자는 13일 “검찰은 일반적으로 압수품은 폐기처리를 하지만 이번에는 규모가 커 처리비용이 적잖게 들어 국외반출 조치를 결정한 것으로 보인다”고 전했다.

검찰은 지난 6월 배출가스 기준 초과 또는 배기관 누설 문제가 발견된 유로6 (Euro6) 디젤엔진이 장착된 3개 차종 아우디 A1, A3, 폭스바겐 골프 차량 950여 대를 아우디폭스바겐코리아의 평택센터에서 압수했다.

세계적으로 배출가스 조작 의혹이 제기된 유로5 차종 외에, 유럽의 강화된 유로6 가 적용된 차량을 압수한 건 한국이 처음인 것으로 알려졌다.

조사 결과 검찰은 이 중 2015년 7월부터 지난해 1월까지 수입통관한 아우디 A3와 폭스바겐 골프 차량 600여 대가 질소산화물 배출기준을 초과한 것으로 판정됐다고 밝혔다.

서울중앙지검 형사5부 (최기식 부장검사) 는 11일 배출가스, 소음 등의 시험성적서 조작 혐의를 받은 아우디폭스바겐코리아의 전 현직 임직원을 기소하며 관련 수사를 11개월 만에 종결했다.

검찰은 이날 대기환경보전법 위반, 소음 진동관리법 위반, 공무 집행방해 등 혐의로 요하네스 타머 아우디폭스바겐 코리아 총괄사장, 박동훈 전 폭스바겐 코리아 사장 (현 르노삼성자동차 사장) 을 불구속 기소했고, 트레버 힐 전 아우디폭스바겐 총괄사장을 약식 기소했다. 양벌규정에 따라 아우디폭스바겐코리아도 재판에 넘겨졌다.

또한, 환경부는 12일 배출가스를 조작한 폭스바겐 티구안 디젤 차량 2만 7,000대의 리콜을 승인했다.

2015년 11월 배출가스 조작 혐의로 정부가 12만 5,522대에 리콜명령을 내린 지 1년 2개월 만에 통과됐다. 환경부는 나머지 9만 9,000대의 폭스바겐 차량에 대해 배기량, 엔진 출력 등에 따라 5개 그룹으로 나눠 리콜계획서를 받은 후 검증을 할 것이라고 밝혔다.

Korea to send back VW’s 950 seized cars to Germany

[THE INVESTOR] Some 950 Audi and Volkswagen vehicles that were confiscated last year for violating emissions tests will be shipped back to the German headquarters, industry sources said on Jan. 13.

“The seized cars have defects. We usually destroy the items that are confiscated, but it costs a lot to scrap cars. So we are planning to send them back to Germany at their cost,” an official with the prosecution said on condition of anonymity.

In June last year, South Korean prosecutors seized three models, including Audi A1, A3 and Volkswagen Golf, from the carmaker’s pre-delivery inspection center in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province, saying two-thirds of cars had been imported without certification and the rest emits harmful gases.

The vehicles were the first cars equipped with Europe’s more stringent Euro 6 emission standard to be confiscated globally.

An official of Audi Volkswagen Korea declined to comment on the issue.

The Seoul Central Prosecution Office on Jan. 11 wrapped up a yearlong probe into the German automaker’s emissions cheating scandal in Korea. The authorities indicted seven current and incumbent employees of the Korean unit, including Johannes Thammer, CEO of Audi Volkswagen Korea, and his predecessors Trevor Hill and Park Dong-hoon -- who now heads Renault Samsung Motors -- for fabricating test results to win sales approval from the country.

Separately, the Ministry of Environment on Jan. 12 approved VW’s stalled recall plan to fix 27,000 Tiguan sport utility vehicles to meet the emissions standards, after previously rejecting the proposals three times.

The Tiguan vehicles are among the 125,522 cars the Korean government ordered VW to recall in November 2015 after it admitted to manipulating emissions devices globally.

The ministry will review the remaining 99,000 vehicles for a recall.
