US President-elect Donald Trump on Sunday named Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus to be his first White House chief of staff.
Trump also named his campaign CEO Steve Bannon to serve as his chief strategist.
"I am thrilled to have my very successful team continue with me in leading our country," Trump said in a statement. "Steve and Reince are highly qualified leaders who worked well together on our campaign and led us to a historic victory. Now I will have them both with me in the White House as we work to make America great again."
Priebus is considered one of the top contributors behind Trump's winning of the Republican nomination and his election victory as he has consistently backed Trump even when mainstream Republicans expressed strong opposition to the real-estate tycoon being their standard-bearer.
House Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell have urged Trump to pick Priebus, telling Trump they believed the RNC chairman is the right choice and the best fit for the position, CNN reported.
"It is truly an honor to join President-elect Trump in the White House as his chief of staff," Priebus said. "I am very grateful to the president-elect for this opportunity to serve him and this nation as we work to create an economy that works for everyone, secure our borders, repeal and replace Obamacare, and destroy radical Islamic terrorism. He will be a great president for all Americans." (Yonhap)
