South Korean investigators said Sunday that pilot error was blamed for a Korean Air flight sliding off the runway while landing at Guam International Airport last year.

Korean Air Flight 2115 skidded off the runway during heavy rains caused by a typhoon and hit a patch of grass before steering back onto the runway and coming to a stop in the early morning on July 5 last year.

The accident caused damage to the left engine and fuselage of the Boeing 737-800, as well as runway lights, said a report posted on the website of the Aviation and Railway Accident Investigation Board.

Still, none of the 75 passengers and six crew members was injured, according to the investigation board, which is controlled by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

The investigation board said the jet skidded off the runway due to the pilot's error and his failure to not abort the landing despite low visibility.

It also said the pilot was making a second attempt to land after initiating a go-around.

"The pilot appears to have landed to avoid having to fly back to Kansai International Airport after a second go-around," the investigation board said.

The Japanese airport was selected as an alternative airport as Saipan International Airport was also affected by the approaching typhoon.

The investigation board said Korean Air must ensure that its pilots abort landings when they cannot land safely due to low visibility. It also told Korean Air to train its pilots through training simulators on how to land safely in low visibility when the runway is slick. (Yonhap)
