LIG Nex1 Co, a South Korean aerospace manufacturer and defense company, plans to establish a joint research center with a top university to develop core technology for cyber warfare, the company said on Tuesday.

LIG Nex1 signed an agreement with Korea University on Tuesday to launch the Cyber War Technology Joint Research Center, which will combine the 40-year-old defense company’s technology and experience with Korean University’s research capability.

“Cyberattacks by North Korea have become enormous threats. As South Korea is equipped with the world’s top ICT infrastructure, it is inevitable to prepare for cyberattacks that could paralyze the national network and result in a dire situation,” the company said in a statement.

The research center is expected to expand the domestic capacity for technology necessary for cyber warfare and contribute to strengthening national security, the company said.

Cyber warfare refers to activities aimed at controlling, disrupting or destroying an enemy’s computer network through cyberattacks. It is increasingly considered a crucial part of national security.
