Samsung Heavy mulling project management, outsourcing shipbuilding

[THE INVESTOR] Samsung Heavy Industries CEO Park Dae-young said on Aug. 19 the company may offer project management and operating and maintenance services.
Speaking at a shareholders meeting, Park said that such services are being considered as new business opportunities.
“There were many requests for operating and maintenance services from shipowners, but a large part (of operating and maintenance services) is going to Singapore,” Park said.

“If we, who know the most about a ship, offer (operating and maintenance services) it would be a big help to us and the shipowners.”
Park also said the company could outsource the shipbuilding process to smaller Korean shipyard, or those in China and Indonesia.

Park ruled out the possibility that Samsung Heavy may stop building ships altogether, and that project management services will be offered for types of vessels the company does not offer.
Samsung Heavy CEO also said that he drew 9,700 won (US$8.70) salary in July, and that executives and midlevel management employees returned between 10 percent and 30 percent of their pay in July.
