Premium whiskeys are being sold at half price at some duty-free stores here, according to industry insiders.

Lotte Duty Free’s outlet at Incheon International Airport is currently offering a 50 percent discount on Ballantine’s 30 Years, selling the Korean favorite at $190, down from the usual $380.

High-end whiskeys are one of the best-selling products at duty-free stores at airports here. They are especially popular among Koreans and Chinese tourists.

Retail prices of whiskey usually go down in summer, as retailers offer steep discounts during the season which normally sees low liquor sales.

But the latest markdown is greater than previous years, an industry insider said. This could be because of increased competition among duty-free stores and a decline in the number of Chinese visitors amid a diplomatic rift between Korea and China over the deployment of a missile defense system, added the official.
