Prosecutors on Monday said they have indicted a minor opposition party lawmaker on charges of receiving some hundreds of millions of won of illegal political funds before the April general elections.

The Seoul Southern District Prosecutors' Office said Rep. Park Joon-yung of the People's Party is suspected of receiving some 352 million won (US$317,000) from a 62-year-old, identified only by his surname Kim, in return for promising to recommend him for proportional representation.

The 69-year-old is also accused of under reporting the cost of advertisement fees to the National Election Committee and sending campaign messages to hundreds of people on the day of the election, which is prohibited under the local law.

The prosecution has twice sought a warrant to formally arrest Park, once in May and again in July, but a local court rejected both requests, citing a need to protect the suspect's right to defend himself. (Yonhap)
