The state prosecutor's office said Wednesday that it has decided to dismiss a senior prosecutor who is suspected of verbally and physically assaulting a junior colleague, leading to his suicide earlier this year.
The inspection department under the Supreme Prosecutors' Office said it will advise the country's Prosecutor General Kim Soo-nam to ask the justice ministry to fire the senior prosecutor, identified only by his surname Kim, wrapping up their month-long investigation.
The Ministry of Justice is expected to make a final decision after holding a disciplinary committee.
The prosecution launched the probe earlier this month, as Kim Hong-young, 33, who worked at the Seoul Southern District Prosecutors' Office, committed suicide in May.
There have been allegations raised against the 33-year-old's superior that he had been harassing the victim, verbally and physically.
After analyzing the deceased prosecutor's computer records, phone call log and the messages he shared with his friends through social media, the inspection team concluded that harassment actually took place.
The prosecution said it would be inappropriate for the senior prosecutor to continue in his job when he habitually harassed and insulted his colleagues.
According to the probe result, the senior prosecutor is involved in a total of 17 similar cases in 29 months, while he was at the district prosecutors' office and at the ministry.
"I sincerely apologize for what happened," said Chung Byung-ha, chief of the inspection department, during a press conference held at the SPO in Seoul. "We will put utmost efforts to create a sound organization and to make sure Kim's death does not become meaningless." (Yonhap)
