The Ministry of Unification and horse racing track operator LetsRun Corporation, said Monday that three additional food trucks run by North Korean defectors will be launched at Busan and Jejudo Island’s horse racing grounds, from September.
In January, the ministry funded the launch of two food trucks run by North Korean defectors at Seoul’s LetsRun Park horse racing track, along with the LetsRun Corporation and Hyundai Motors.
An additional three food trucks -- two in Busan’s LetsRun Park and one in Jejudo Island’s -- will be launched after they undergo screening.
Korea Hana Foundation, the organization responsible for defectors’ integration into South Korean society, will screen the applicants over a two-week period starting Monday.
Those who are selected will go through start-up consultations that cover factors such as menu for the food truck, as well as hygiene and safety training.
The Ministry of Unification said food trucks are ideal businesses for North Korean defectors as they are low-risk businesses that require relatively small start-up capital.
The ministry said, “We wish the South Korean attitude toward North Korean defectors will warm up and that we will nurture in our hearts a hope for a unified Korea.”
