The head of CJ Group, one of Korea's largest food and entertainment conglomerates, has undergone surgery to remove a tumor from his lung, a company official said Thursday.

Sohn Kyung-shik is recovering at Seoul National University Hospital in central Seoul after receiving the surgery on Tuesday, the official said, adding that he is not in serious condition.

Sohn is the uncle of Lee Jay-hyun, another CJ Group chairman who is currently in the hospital awaiting the Supreme Court's ruling on charges of embezzlement, breach of trust and tax evasion.

His confinement has been suspended on several occasions due to his illness since August 2013.

Sohn began to lead CJ Group in 2013 when Lee was detained after being charged for creating secret funds and evading taxes. (Yonhap)
