A senior South Korean foreign ministry official will leave for Britain to discuss its recent decision to leave the European Union with local officials and experts, a source here said Monday.

Kim Hyoung-zhin, South Korea's deputy foreign minister, will hold talks with Hugo Swire, his British counterpart, on the Brexit decision in London on Monday (local time), according to the ministry.

Last month, Britons held a referendum and voted to leave the EU. Following the so-called Brexit decision, global financial markets panicked causing share prices to plunge. More recently, things have stabilized to some extent, with the market recovering lost ground.

The deputy foreign minister's meeting with Swire will mark the first high-ranking face-to-face discussion between the two countries after the vote.

Kim is to have a chance to listen to explanations on the background behind Britain's move to leave the EU. He is also scheduled to meet with officials from major local think tanks during his stay there, the ministry said. (Yonhap)
