Korea's state film agency opened a global forum here on Tuesday to shed light on global trends in the film and media industries and examine ways for Korean films to reach wider audiences abroad.

The two-day forum hosted by the Korean Film Council consists of two sessions on the future of virtual-reality cinema and the new global content distribution strategy in the information-technology era.

Speakers include creative producer Yelena Rachitsky of the U.S.-based Oculus Story Studio, a leading player in the VR field, and Nexus producer Claire Spencer Cook for the first session and Netflix's deputy head David Lee and Sam Cai, a senior researcher at China's largest internet service portal Tencent, for the second session.

In 2015, the Korean film industry surpassed 2 trillion won ($1.7 billion) in sales for the second year in a row, driven by a record number of moviegoers, according to KOFIC data. The number of moviegoers topped 200 milllion for the third consecutive year.

But exports remained small at 628 million won, accounting for only 3 percent of total sales.

"The forum will serve as a bridge for the domestic film industry people to build a global network with overseas industry experts such as the United States and China," Park Deok-ho, chief of the agency's international affairs team, said in a press release. "It will become a chance to learn ways for Korean films to achieve a success on the global stage." (Yonhap)
