BMW Korea, the local unit of the German carmaker, will recall a combined 1,751 units of its 3 series and 4 series sedans for potential defects in the fuel pump, the Seoul government said Wednesday.

A crack in the plating of the fuel pump may lead to an engine malfunction, causing the car to stop without warning, according to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

The ministry said the South Korean authorities have been inspecting the case since March this year after 10 BMW sedans reportedly caught fire on the road here over a duration of several months.

The recall will apply to sedans including the models 320d and 420d produced between June 25, 2014, and Sept. 3, 2014.

Free repair services will be available starting Thursday at the company’s service centers throughout the country, the ministry said.

BMW will also recall 1,760 units of its 7 series sedans produced between July 29, 2015, and Jan. 13, 2015, for a defect in their air bag control unit. Owners of the cars will receive free air bag parts replacement services starting June 13.
