Online shopping sales in Korea jumped 22.7 percent in February from a year earlier on rising demand for tour packages and cosmetics, a government report showed Monday.

Total online transactions reached 4.69 trillion won ($4.1 billion) in the second month of 2016, compared with 3.82 trillion won a year earlier, according to the report compiled by Statistics Korea.

The February tally, however, retreated 10 percent from January's 5.21 trillion won, marking the second consecutive on-month decline since it hit a record high of 5.36 trillion won in December.

Purchases made through smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices also soared 54 percent on-year to 2.39 trillion won to account for 51 percent of all online sales in February, down slightly from 51.2 percent the previous month.

Some 854.2 billion won worth of travel packages and reservations were made online in February, up 48.6 percent from a year earlier, while online sales of cosmetics skyrocketed 80.7 percent on-year to 366.5 billion won over the cited period.

This year's Lunar New Year's Day fell on Feb. 8, with a five-day-long holiday.

Online purchases of clothing jumped 44.7 percent on-year to 427.6 billion won, while foodstuffs rose 45.1 percent to 438.6 billion won. (Yonhap)
