Worldwide combined sales of handsets fell on-quarter in October-December 2015, data showed Wednesday.

According to data compiled by industry tracker Strategy Analytics, the global sales of handsets, including smartphones, shed 1 percent in the fourth quarter from the previous quarter. It marked the first time in more than two years for a quarterly figure to record on-quarter decline.

Industry watchers attributed the drop, the first in 10 quarters, to the sharp fall in the production of traditional handsets.

However, the shipment of smartphones managed to sustain two-digit on-year growth in 2015 despite the market saturation by rising 12 percent.

The world’s largest smartphone-maker Samsung Electronics and its U.S. rival Apple accounted for 66 percent of the market over the cited period. Apple also stood as the leading player in terms of sales at major markets on the back of its efforts to focus on premium smartphones.

Strategy Analytics said Samsung and Apple will continue to be the top players throughout 2016, while smaller brands may suffer drops in their sales.
