South Korea's Gender Minister Kang Eun-hee stressed Seoul's intent to work towards eradicating child abuse in the country at a United Nations meeting, the ministry said Wednesday.

Kang vowed to implement a comprehensive policy to lower incidents of violence against children, which has been a nagging issue in South Korea, in her speech before the 60th session of the U.N. Commission on the Status of Women, the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family said.

The number of child abuse incidents in the country has nearly doubled over the past decade to about 13,076 in 2013, according to data compiled by the Korea Institute of Criminology in January.

The ministry said it has created a police division and protocols dedicated to investigating incidents of child abuse. It also plans to expand parental education on children's human rights to prevent future cases.

Meanwhile, Kang held a bilateral meeting with the Dutch Minister of Education, Culture and Science Jet Bussemaker on the sidelines of the U.N. meeting to discuss South Korea and the Netherlands' policies to boost female economic activity, the ministry said. (Yonhap)
