LG Electronics said Thursday it had maintained its spot as the No. 1 holder of “essential” technology patents related to the Long Term Evolution network for the fifth consecutive year in 2015.

Citing data compiled by U.S. patent tracker TechIPM, the South Korean firm said it held the most number of related patents in the segment in the United States. The data includes LTE-Advanced technologies.

An “essential” patent refers to core technologies vital for the operation of the LTE network, the company said.

Samsung Electronics, LG’s bigger local tech rival, followed, trailed by U.S.-based Qualcomm Inc.

LG Electronics said it has been making efforts to take the lead in the fifth-generation network as well.

One of the major areas of focus includes full duplex radio technology, which can double the speed of existing networks, the company added.
