The bereaved families of students who died in a ferry disaster in 2014 reached an agreement with other parents at the school Tuesday to replicate the classrooms of the former students elsewhere instead of leaving them unused.
The classrooms at the Danwon High School in Ansan, Gyeonggi Province, have been preserved the way they were since the 6,825-ton ferry Sewol sank in waters off the country's southwestern coast and left 304 people dead. Most of the deaths involved the students from the school on a field trip to Jeju Island.
There has been a controversy as parents other than the bereaved demanded the classrooms be given to new students, whereas parents of the victims said there is a need to preserve them to make a constructive conversation out of the disaster.
The school, parents and the bereaved families decided on temporarily reproducing the classrooms' settings with the original furnishings in an auditorium building at Ansan Office of Education by April 16, the second anniversary of the disaster.
They said the replicas will be then moved to a memorial center, slated to be established by 2019. (Yonhap)
