“Spirit’ s Homecoming,” a film that portrays Korean women who served as sex slaves for Japanese soldiers during colonial rule, has topped in the local box office since it was released Wednesday.
The movie surpassed 750,000 admissions on Sunday morning, according to data from the Korean Film Council.
It took almost 14 years for Cho Jung-rae, the director of the movie, to finish filming because he had to stop shooting due to lack of resources.
Cho said he was able to complete the film with the help of the public -- 75,000 people invested nearly 1.2 billion won ($970,000) through crowdfunding.
It is unusual for a low-budget film to gain such attention, beating other big-budget flicks “Deadpool” and “A Violent Prosecutor.”
Industry watchers said the film was likely to garner more popularity from the public because of its relevance to the recent controversial deal between Korea and Japan on the sex slavery issue.
