Samsung Electronics on Wednesday introduced a new system chip utilizing advanced 14-nanometer technology that will be used in a broad range of devices including budget smartphones.

Samsung Electronics said mass production of the Exynos 7 Octa 7870 will begin in the first quarter of 2016. The chip was produced using the 14 nanometer FinFET process technology and is the company’s latest system-on-chip integrating all components of a computer and other electronic systems onto a single integrated circuit.

Previously, chips using 14-nano technology was applied exclusively to high-end smartphones. But Samsung said on Wednesday that the Exynos 7870 will also be used in budget devices.

Products using the Exynos 7870 will have a 30 percent higher power efficiency than those with the previous 28 nanometer technology. They also will support long-term evolution speed and provide better location-based data via the Global Navigation Satellite System.

The company began the industry’s first production of the 14-nanometer AP, the Exynos 7 Octa 7420, in early 2015.
