Korea ranked 14th among major peers in stock market capitalization last year, the bourse operator here said Monday.

The combined market cap of listed firms in the country reached $1.23 trillion as of the end of 2015, accounting for 1.96 percent of the global market, the Korea Exchange (KRX) said citing data compiled by the World Federation of Exchange.

The end-2015 market cap is a 1.5 percent increase from the previous year's $1.21 trillion, though its global standing remained unchanged, it noted.

In 2015, the total global stock market shed 1.1 percent on-year to reach $62.8 trillion due mainly to a fall in the European, Middle East and African stock markets.

The United States topped the list, with the NYSE being No. 1 with a market value of $17.79 trillion and the NASDAQ coming in second with $7.28 trillion. They accounted for 39.9 percent of the total global market cap, the data showed.

Japan ranked third with $4.89 trillion, enjoying an 11.8 percent hike in its market cap last year, followed by China's Shanghai SE, which grew 15.7 percent to $4.54 trillion, and Shenzhen SE that spiked a whopping 75.6 percent to $3.64 trillion, according to the KRX. (Yonhap)
