Hyundai Motor Co., South Korea's leading automaker, unveiled its first dedicated green car model on Thursday, targeting to take over market leader Prius.

The Ioniq hybrid, scheduled to be officially launched in mid-January, was disclosed to media early in the day during a preview event held at its Namyang R&D Center southwest of Seoul.

"The Ioniq is the world's top-class environmentally friendly dedicated vehicle, which will be the beginning of the change in Hyundai Motor’s future mobility," the company said in a press release.

The new model will mark the first time for Hyundai Motor to unveil a car exclusively developed as an electric vehicle. It has launched hybrid versions of existing models, such as the Sonata.

The Ioniq hybrid is equipped with the latest 1.6 GDi engine with up to 105 horsepower and 15.0 kg-meters of torque along with a high-efficiency motor that produces 43.5 horsepower and a torque of 17.3 kg-meters.

Equipped with the six-speed DCT transmission exclusively developed for hybrid vehicles, Hyundai Motor claims it has achieved fuel efficiency of 22.4 kmpl, the "highest level" among same-class cars.

The Ioniq's design was inspired by a killer whale, creating a "unique" aerodynamic exterior. The black-rimmed radiator grille and head lamps contrast with its surroundings, while the C-type LED daytime running lights combined with the wheel air curtain emphasize the overall dynamic image, the company said.

Punctuated by the slim and elongated dashboard, the inside gives a roomy impression. The chrome-coated gear knob, pedals, footrest and other touches also underline the overall luxurious image, it explained.

The price of the Ioniq ranges from 22.9 to 27.8 million won depending on options. The prices reflect the tax breaks applied to hybrid models.

Hyundai Motor said that it plans to expand its lineup going forward by launching its electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle models within this year. (Yonhap)
