South Korea and the European Union have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening their strategic partnership as their top diplomats discussed bilateral and regional issues including North Korea, the Foreign Ministry said Saturday.

Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se and European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini held talks in Luxembourg on Thursday on the sidelines of a foreign ministers' session of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM), which ended a two-day session on Friday.

ASEM brings together 51 European and Asian countries with the aim of promoting political, economic and other exchanges.

The two diplomats said that their talks will help further strengthen the strategic partnership between South Korea and the EU which was established in 2010, according to the foreign ministry.

Both sides also shared the need for close coordination with the global community to prod North Korea into giving up its nuclear weapons program as they discussed a follow-up to a landmark deal on Iran's nukes.

Separately, Yun held talks with his German counterpart Frank-Walter Steinmeier on Thursday to discuss ways to promote peace and stability in Northeast Asia, the ministry added. (Yonhap)
