U.S.-based direct sales giant Amway opened the Amway Botanical Research Center in Wuxi, China, last Friday, as the company seeks to step up its research on herbs used in Oriental medicine for potential use in its health and beauty products.
Built with an investment of $13 million and spanning across 34 hectares of farmland, the ABRC includes an advanced laboratory and a greenhouse to study soil nutrients and plant physiology which will potentially lead to new product development, according to Amway.

“The new ABRC supports our efforts to research and understand Chinese botanicals to a greater extent, using the most advanced technologies and scientific practices, and integrate the findings into our products,” said George Calvert, Amway’s head of global R&D and supply chain.
Amway said it took more than three years to find a site that could match the high quality standards at the company’s certified organic farms in Brazil, Mexico and the U.S. The center was constructed in Wuxi after the firm optimized the site for two years, purifying the land’s soil, water systems and surrounding environment.
