The president of Youku Inc., China's largest video-streaming website, said Thursday he hopes to cooperate with South Korea as his company pushes for a paid membership system and a peer-to-peer video-sharing technology.

"I try extremely hard to adjust to new changes with South Korean (content) creators," Frank Ming Wei told reporters ahead of a session at the Broadcast Worldwide conference in southern Seoul.

"That's the biggest reason I visited South Korea."

Youku was founded in 2006 and now boasts 650 million members, the largest number among all Chinese video websites. It offers unlimited space for videos and successfully listed itself on the New York Stock Exchange in 2011.

Like Netflix, Youku is considering offering a paid service, according to Wei. His company is also collaborating with Alibaba Group to create a platform that allows users to purchase goods and watch videos at the same time.

Wei also hinted at his desire to produce original content with South Korean producers. Joining up with Youku would help South Korean creators make inroads into the Chinese entertainment market, where piracy and copyright infringements are common, he said.

"Youku considers South Korea as a collaboration partner," he said. "I hope there are many opportunities for us to cooperate in the future." (Yonhap)
