PyeongChang Olympics organizers release sustainability report

Organizers of the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang announced Thursday they've released the country's first Sustainability Report blueprint for hosting major sporting events.
The report, titled "PyeongChang 2018: Opening New Horizons for Sustainability -- Furthering Benefits to Human and Nature," is based on the Global Reporting Initiative, G4, Event Organizers Sector Supplement Guidelines, which deal with the sectors of the economy, the environment and society.
The organizing committee said the report also includes PyeongChang's plans to run a sustainable Olympics.
It added that PyeongChang hopes to run a "low-carbon, green Olympics" while minimizing ecological damage.
Aside from environmental protection, PyeongChang officials said they'd like to lay foundations for the continued prosperity of the local economy and improved quality of life for the residents in the region.
PyeongChang is located in Gangwon Province on the east coast, considered one of the least developed parts of the country.
PyeongChang organizers also said the Olympics will establish the city as "a global city contributing to the promotion of the Olympics and winter sports in Asia," with a focus on the protection and conservation of the environment.
Cho Yang-ho, president of the organizing committee, said the report will be a key tool to communicate with all Olympic stakeholders to ensure a socially responsible games.
"I believe that establishing a strategy for sustainable management and publishing the Sustainability Report will enable us to set up a well-balanced economic, social and environmental framework, and ensure the transparency of business operations," Cho added. (Yonhap)
