A large-scale pop concert will be held in Seoul on the eve of the 70th anniversary of Korea's liberation from the 1910-45 Japanese colonial rule, the government said Tuesday.

The concert will take place in Seoul Plaza, central Seoul, at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 14, the eve of Korean Liberation Day, said the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

The event will commemorate the people's journey through 70 years of turbulent modern history and drum up festivity for the anniversary, it said.

"This event will offer a chance to celebrate the people's great journey to the 70th year of Korean liberation and combine their forces for a new leap," Yoon Ki-churl, the artistic director of the gala, said during a news conference in Seoul. "We hope all of the people will enjoy the concert."

Big name singers such as Yang Hee-eun, Insooni, Lee Seung-chul, Kim Bum-soo, Sistar, Jang Jane and Ulala Session are among the performers in the concert.

They will perform symbolic songs that best represent each era of Korean contemporary history such as "Tree of Sorrow" and "Morning Dew," according to the ministry.

There also will be a dance and piano collaboration, a rock band, choirs and a multimedia show.

The concert will close with singer Lee Seung-chul singing "The Day" with a choir composed of young North Korean defectors.

Ministry officials estimate that about 15,000 to 20,000 people will attend the event. The concert will be broadcast on national broadcaster KBS as well as Arirang TV and K-TV channels. (Yonhap)
