A Seoul court ruled Tuesday that the country's judiciary institute's decision to expel a law student involved in an extramarital affair is legitimate.

The male student, whose identity was withheld, appealed to the Seoul High Court to go back to the Judicial Research and Training Institute but was dismissed.

He had an affair with another law student between August 2012 and April 2013.

The incident was made public when his mother-in-law came out to the street to protest after her daughter committed suicide as she found out about her husband's affair.

While the appellant was found guilty of adultery in a lower court, he was acquitted in the upper court as South Korea's Constitutional Court threw out the anti-adultery law earlier this year.

He was expelled from the institute and his girlfriend was punished with a three-month suspension from the institution.

The court said the institute's punishment was legitimate, citing the seriousness of the case.

It was the second case of its kind involving a student being expelled from the institution.
