Life along the Hangang River

A perfect weekend for Lee Jeong-eun, a 35-year-old office worker, is not about striding in shopping malls to grab the last summer dress on sale, having her nails done or watching the latest Hollywood blockbuster in an air-conditioned movie theater.

All she has to do is to go to a campsite in Jamsil Park, one of 12 parks open on the banks of the Hangang River. A book, a bottle of Chilean red wine, some pork for an outdoor barbecue and a couple of good friends are what she needs to recharge.

Thanks to the camping gear rental offered by the Seoul Metropolitan Government, Lee and her friends can sleep on the riverside without having to worry about bringing all the heavy stuff from grill to tent.

“If I lay down on the mat, watch the river flow and see children laughing and running around the green area, I feel much lighter in my spirit,” said Lee who works for a media firm downtown.

“And it only costs 20,000 won ($18) to be there,” she said referring to the cost of renting a tent.

Crossing the heart of Seoul, the Han River has played a central part in the city’s history, politics, industrialization and culture. Though it is still seen as the symbol of the nation’s economic miracle in the modern era, the mighty river has become a vital place for recreation, sports and dining for many struggling to take a break in the bustling megacity.

The river, which runs a total of 500 kilometers from source to sea, is lined with parks, bike paths, riverside coffeehouses and restaurants on both sides of the river.

Geographically, the river splits the nation’s capital into south and north sections. But it is crossed by more than 20 bridges -- including Banpo Bridge, which turns into the world’s largest bridge fountain in the evening.

“You can find small parks in the inner city to rest, but there you can’t enjoy the spectacular skyline of the city while sipping a beer and eating fried chicken on the grass. It is also quite safe to have your kid run around,” said Cho Young, the mother of a 2-year-old daughter.

한강변 생활

35살 사무직원 이정은씨에게 완벽한 주말이란 쇼핑몰로 성큼성큼 걸어 들어가 마지막 남은 세일 중인 여름 옷을 잡거나 손톱 손질 서비스를 받거나 시원한 에어컨 바람이 나오는 영화관에서 최신 허리우드 대작을 감상하는 것에 관한 것이 아니다.

그녀가 해야 할 일은 한강변에 개장한 공원 12군데 중 하나인 잠실공원의 캠프장으로 가는 것이다. 책 한 권, 칠레의 적포도주 한 병, 야외에서 구어 먹을 돼지 고기 약간 그리고 좋은 친구 두 명이면 그녀가 재충전하는 데 필요한 건 다 있는 셈이다.

서울시가 캠핑 장비를 대여하는 덕분에 이씨와 그녀 친구들은 그릴에서 텐트까지 무거운 물건을 다 가지고 가야 하는 걱정을 하지 않고 한강변에서 잠을 청할 수 있다.

시내에 있는 한 미디어 회사에 다니는 이씨는 “돗자리에 누워 한강을 보고 아이들이 녹지대 주변을 뛰어다니며 웃는 모습을 보면 머리가 훨씬 가벼워지는 느낌”이라고 말했다.

그녀는 텐트 대여료를 언급하며 “거기서 쉬는데 비용이 2만원 밖에 안 든다”고 말했다

서울의 중심을 가로지르는 한강은 서울의 역사, 정치, 산업화, 문화에서 중심적인 역할을 해왔다. 한강이 현대인 지금에도 경제 기적의 상징으로 간주되고 있지만 길고 큰 이 강은 분주한 대도시에서 잠시 휴식을 취하려는 많은 사람들이 레크리에이션, 스포츠, 식사를 즐기는 데 없어서는 안될 장소가 됐다.

원천에서부터 바다에 이르기까지 총 500km를 흐르는 한강을 따라 강의 양변에 공원, 자전거길, 강변 찻집, 식당들이 늘어서 있다.

지리적으로 한강은 우리 나라의 수도를 남북으로 가른다. 하지만 한강을 건너는 다리는 20개가 넘는다. 그 중 반포대교는 저녁이 되면 세계 최대의 교각 분수로 변한다.

두 살짜리 딸을 둔 엄마인 조영씨는 “휴식을 취할 수 있는 작은 공원들을 도심 지역에서 찾을 수 있지만 작은 공원에서는 풀밭에 앉아 치킨과 맥주를 먹으며 도시의 멋진 스카이라인을 감상하는 것은 불가능하다. 자식이 뛰어다니도록 해도 매우 안전하다”고 말했다.
