LG Innotek, the world’s top smartphone camera module manufacturer, said Tuesday it has set a milestone with cumulative sales of its camera modules crossing the 1-billion-unit threshold.

The Korean camera module-maker said it sold around 1.4 billion units of camera modules as of May.

The record sales figure came around two years after LG Innotek, which began shipping camera modules in 2005, hit the 50 million sales mark in 2013.

The 1.4 billion camera modules, if lined up, are tantamount to 28,000 kilometers in length, close to the distance from Seoul to New York and back.

Last year alone, LG Innotek sold 240 million units of camera modules, or 660,000 units a day.

Sales of the camera modules reached 2.75 trillion won ($2.5 billion) in 2014, accounting for around 40 percent of the firm’s total sales revenue.

LG Innotek, which supplies smartphone-makers including Apple, has taken the lead in the world’s camera module market for mobile devices since 2011, with a 16 percent market share, according to Research in China.

“LG Innotek puts priority on customer values throughout the entire processes of development, manufacturing and sale,” said Moon Hyung-chul, head of the optic solutions business.

“The company will keep making efforts to provide an easy and enjoyable user experience with high-end camera modules,” he added.
