South Korean tech giant Samsung Electronics Co. said Sunday that its proposal for an ultra-high definition (UHD) television broadcasting technology has been chosen as the candidate for the next standard for the U.S. TV industry.

The proposal, submitted jointly with U.S.-based broadcast infrastructure provider ONE Media, has been adopted by the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) 3.0 Technology Standards Group 3 as a Candidate Standard, the tech firm said in a press release.

The proposal will be established as the final standard after further review by early next year.

The ATSC is an international group, established in 1982, that develops technology standards for digital television used in the U.S. and Canada.

The approved technology, called bootstrap, covers the signaling component of a digital TV transmission system, and its independence from the existing framework of data transmission helps meet more of the requirements by broadcasters, according to Samsung.

In addition, the technology provides better transmission quality for viewers even in times of bad reception, the company said.

"Samsung will continue to work closely with broadcasters and play a leading role in establishing a next-generation broadcast market," said Executive Vice President Kim Chang-yeong, head of Samsung's Digital Media and Communications R&D Center. (Yonhap)
