LG Electronics Inc., South Korea's No. 2 smartphone and home appliance maker, said Tuesday it is considering joining the global partnership for ultra high-definition television and digital content, following rival Samsung's announcement to become a member at the beginning of this year.

"We're looking into joining the UHD Alliance. If we do so, we'll be taking part in setting the standards for UHD technology," a LG Electronics official said.

Introduced in January, the UHD Alliance is made up of major consumer electronics brands, content distributors and Hollywood studios around the globe, which have come together to establish new standards for the UHD ecosystem that best meet consumers' desires.

Key members include Panasonic Corp., Sharp Corp., Netflix, Sony Visual Product Inc., Walt Disney Studios, Twentieth Century Fox and Warner Bros. Entertainment.

The alliance aims to create a road map that ensures the process of digital content distribution via devices comes with premium quality provided by the member companies' advanced UHD technologies.

Samsung Electronics Co., South Korea's No. 1 tech giant, has also joined the group as one of the co-founders. A Samsung executive had indicated earlier that LG might soon join as a new partner. The UHD Alliance was officially launched early this month. (Yonhap)
