Samsung Electronics Co., South Korea's tech giant, has launched its quantum dot-based TV in the United States, the company said Friday, as it kicks off the global sale of its latest premium lineups.

Samsung unveiled the quantum dot TV, also dubbed the SUHD TV, before the press at a launching event held in the Rockefeller Center in New York on Thursday (U.S. time), it said in a statement.

A quantum dot TV is made with a film of semiconductor nanocrystals, known as quantum dot, that can reproduce 64 times more accurate colors than existing liquid crystal display.

It has emerged as one of the next-generation display materials in the industry since its lower costs compared with OLED TVs allow more leeway for production volume.

Eight new models were showcased at the site, including four SUHD TVs in 55, 65, 78 and 88 inches.

All of Samsung's SUHD TVs are installed with its own operating system Tizen, as the tech firm has pledged to bolster the presence of its software in the market this year.

Samsung has been at the forefront of the quantum dot TV production, with an aim to take the lead in the new display technology against global rivals.

In January, Samsung Electronics rolled out its first quantum dot models in six different sizes from 65 inches to 110 inches during the four-day Consumer Electronics Show held in Las Vegas. (Yonhap)
