Samsung SDI, a leading battery maker in South Korea, has started running a next-generation energy system, called “UES,” which allows stable and efficient energy supply and management, according to the company Thursday. The system was created at its research and development center in Uiwang City, Gyeonggi Province.

The company said the new technology would help the firm cement its lead in the global energy system industry.

The “UES,” a portmanteau of an uninterruptible power and energy storage system, is the first of its kind in the world. 


It works as a backup power source in the event of power failure, while the ESS stores electricity when demand is low and supplies electricity during high levels of demand.

Energy storage and supply technology has been thrown into the limelight recently as it becomes critical for business operators, especially those in the IT and manufacturing sectors, to secure stable power supply in any condition.

The battery business of Samsung Group has been working with Samsung Electronics, which runs the world’s top semiconductor business, since 2013 to develop the new energy storage and supply technology, which boasts the industry’s highest performance levels
