South Korean tech giant Samsung Electronics Co. on Friday showcased the Galaxy BLADE Edge, a parody of its offbeat high-end handset the Galaxy S6 Edge that will hit the market later this month, in line with its marketing efforts on April Fools' Day.

"Samsung is proud to announce the world's first smart knife with smartphone capabilities, the Galaxy BLADE Edge. Galaxy BLADE Edge is the ultimate cooking companion, made with the modern chef in mind," the company said in a made-up statement on its official website, Samsung Tomorrow.

"The Galaxy BLADE Edge comes with all the incredible features of the Galaxy S6, but its edge is so sharp and strong that the device can also serve as a chef's knife," it bragged.

The joke came ahead of the official launch of the Galaxy S6 Edge, which will be available for global purchase starting April 10.

An update of the Galaxy Note Edge, which adopted a curved screen on only one side, the Galaxy S6 Edge boasts bent screens on both sides to provide users with a wider view.

While the company has been pushing the innovation, users have doubted its usefulness.

The company also highlighted several features of the Galaxy S6 Edge, adding "with Samsung's powerful defense-grade KNOX Security, you'll never cut yourself again." KNOX security is an anti-virus solution equipped in Samsung handsets.

"As most of you will have noticed, this is not a real product or concept by Samsung at all, at least not yet," the company added.

South Korea's mobile carriers started accepting preorders for the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge this week. The new smartphones will boast the industry's first wireless-charging batteries and Samsung's mobile payment system set for a local debut in the second half of this year. (Yonhap)
