우버x 한국 서비스 중단키로 결정, 서울시에 항복?

우버테크놀리지가 6일 오후 5시부로 승차공유 서비스인 우버엑스(UberX)를 종료한다고 밝혔다.

우버코리아는 6일 서울시와의 대화를 진행하기 위해 “서울에서 우버엑스 서비스를 중단하기로 결정했다”고 운전자들에게 보낸 이메일에 밝혔다.

우버 측은 이번 결정은 특히 택시 업계의 제안을 받아들인 것이라고 강조했다. 우버 관계자는 “서울시 및 택시 업계와의 타협점을 찾기 위해 협력할 것”이라며 “함께 규제옵션을 모색할 것을 기대한다”고 전했다.

이번 결정은 오는10일 국회에서 열릴 우버택시 영업금지법(여객자동차 운수사업법 개정안)과 개인택시 양도상속 규제 완화법(여객자동차 운수사업법 개정안)의 국토교통위원회 소위원회의 심사를 앞두고 발표됐다.

우버는 택시 업계 및 서울시와 원활한 대화를 이어가는 반면 서비스 활성화를 위해 지난달 26일부터 우버엑스 모델을 무료로 전환했다.

우버는 영업용 차량이 아닌 운전기사 개인이 소유한 차량으로 택시와 같은 서비스를 제공하는 것으로 고급 리무진과 기사를 이용한 우버블랙, 일반승용차를 대상으로하는 우버엑스와 우버 택시가 있다.

UberX to shut down in Korea

The low-cost ride-sharing service UberX will shut down in Korea from 5 p.m. Friday, Uber Korea said.

“Uber Korea has decided to shut down the operations of UberX to negotiate with the Seoul city government,” Uber Korea said in an email to drivers Friday afternoon.

The company said that it was “a very difficult decision” as they have been trying to expand UberX operations in South Korea since the service was launched in August 2014.

The decision comes days before the National Assembly is set to discuss related issues.

Uber services have been faced with regulatory issues and resistance from local taxi operators.

Last week, the operator began offering free rides in order to avoid further conflict while continuing operations.
